March 7, 2009 - It's week one of the Florida swing on the PGA Tour. The big boys have moved east as we get ever so close to the season's first major championship in early April. The Honda Classic features one of the tour's most difficult courses in PGA National. PGA National has hosted multiple Ryder Cup matches and was a regular stop on the Senior Tour / Champions Tour and this week is challenging the world's top players.
Adam Frillman joined Dustin Ashby in studio for this week's show and welcomed a great slate of guests for the best two hours of golf talk radio available in the market. Dustin teed it up at Glen Echo on Friday with the University of Missouri-St. Louis golf team and thoroughly enjoyed the chance to put the ball in the air on one of St. Louis' most historic layouts. Adam and Dustin ran down the leaderboard through 36 holes at the Honda Classic and touched on a few of the interesting storylines coming from this week's tour event.
Seven time Metropolitan Amateur Player of the Year, Skip Berkmeyer, joined the discussion and talked about the challenges of playing on greens / turf that you aren't accustomed too. The guys previewed Skip's tournament schedule for 2009, which will again include trips to the Coleman, Porter Cup and Crump Cup. Skip then introduced an event that is returning on March 22-23 featuring top players from the Gateway PGA and Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association. Skip, along with Ryan Roy, collaborated with their respective Associations to resurrect the Ryder Cup style matches. The event will be held at Norwood Hills Country Club on the East Course.
The guys checked in with their "Man on the Ground" at the Honda Classic, Tom Frillman. Yep, that's right, the guys are leveraging Adam's old man for a little inside information on the happenings at PGA National. Tom followed Jay Williamson for much of his round on Friday and gave a blow by blow of Jay's play through the emphasis Bear Trap. Tom was very impressed with the play of Rory McIlroy.
